For over four centuries, Goa was ruled by the Portuguese and for brief periods the state turned into Muslim and Hindu kingdoms and the influences of all these cultures are palpable in Goan cuisine.

One can associate Goan cuisine with combinations of spicy flavors and depth. Rice, seafood, coconut, vegetables, meat, pork, and local spices are some of the main ingredients in Goan cuisine. But out of all these due to its proximity to the coastal belt in India, fish is an important part of Goan food.

Ingredients for making Goa Fish Curry

1 cup Grated Coconut
1 tbsp Coriander Powder
5 Dry Kashmiri Chilli
1 tbsp Cumin Seeds
1 tsp Tamarind Powder
1 tsp Turmeric Powder
5 Garlic Clove
1 tsp Ginger
10 ml Water
3 tsp Vegetable Oil
1 small onion chopped fine
1 small tomato chopped fine
180 grms of King fish
2/3 cup water (add more if needed)
2 Green chilli
Salt to taste
1 can of coconut milk (100 ml)

How to make Goan Fish Curry at Home

Steps for making Goan Fish Curry at Home:

Step 1- Grind together 1 cup grated coconut, 1 tbsp coriander powder, 5 Dry Kashmiri chili, 1 tbsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp tamarind powder, 1 tsp turmeric powder, 5 garlic clove, 1 tsp ginger, and 10 ml water and make a smooth paste.

Step 2- Now heat a pan and add 3 tsp vegetable oil and the chopped onions. Saute till golden brown.

Step 3 – Now add chopped tomatoes and pour the mixture from the grinder into the pan.

Step 4 – Cook for a few minutes and then add 2/3 cup of water

Step 5 – Now add 2 green chilies, split in half, and 2 dry red chilies to the pot.

Step 6 – Stir the mixture and cook till the curry has a smooth consistency and then add pieces of King fish.

Step 7 – Add 100 ml coconut milk to the mixture and cook for 2-3 minutes before turning off the gas.

Step 8 – Serve the curry in a bowl with rice (white or brown).
