Save the Sea Betalbatim-Colva Beach Clean-up Drive

Colva beach in South Goa is famous for water sports activities, beach shacks, restaurants, and bars whereas Betalbatim Beach, nestled between two other popular beaches – Colva Beach and Majorda Beach, is a beautiful, serene beach uninterrupted by adventure lovers and a ideal for rejuvenation and relaxation. The water on Betalbatim beach shines exceptionally during the night due to the presence of bioluminescence and the beach also offers the most amazing sunrise and sunset views.

Post lockdown, Goa experienced a surge in tourism, and a study conducted by NCPOR and Goa university’s school of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science in March 2022, showcased that the lifting of travel restrictions and resumption of mass tourism led to profuse quantities of garbage being dumped back on to the beaches and the seas of Goa. Colva beach alone experienced a 135.06% increase in littering levels as per the stats from the research study.

As a part of the celebration of India’s 75th Independence year, the Indian government announced a coastal clean-up initiative for the 75 most popular beaches to further support this effort at the local level many local businesses such as Beleza by the Beach resort in Goa also joined hands.

Beleza by the Beach, a luxury spa resort located near Colva beach, has always been an environmentally conscious resort and has actively employed sustainable practices at the resort in a variety of ways. In 2022 alone, the resort has held two beach clean-up drives as a part of its sustainability efforts and to maintain the beauty of the beach that lends the property its tranquil charm since it is located on Betalbatim beach. In the most recent effort named “Save the Sea Betalbatim-Colva Beach Clean-up Drive” help on 9th Sep 2022, the team at Beleza collected 15 kgs of debris and plastic waste consisting of plastic cups, water bottles, cans, plastic wrappers, fishing nets, and other non-degradable waste that poses a huge treat to the aquatic life.
